Field Notes - Busy!

1/22/2010 - Busy!

Busy!

So, I've been quite busy the last couple of weeks (nothing new there, actually).  I suddenly realized that it was Friday and I hadn't submitted a blog for this week or last.  Thought I'd write a quick review of what I've been doing for the last several days.  Today, thus far, I have been following up on several National Emergency Grants (NEGs).  A lot of our major lay-offs are also Trade Act certified, as I've written about before.  When a lay-off gets Trade Act certified all training should switch over to the Trade Act funding stream.  If that lay-off already has an NEG in place, any training that has been funded under the NEG should be switched over to Trade Act funding.  This, then, requires a modification to the NEG contract to reflect the movement of training out of the NEG.  So, I've been working on modifying a couple NEGs because of Trade Act certification.

We just found out this week that Oregon received the State Energy Sector Partnership (SESP) Grant I had worked on back in November and October.  That's very exciting and will give us the opportunity to help craft a Green Jobs Certificate which will be offered by community colleges across rural Oregon.  I am one of the leads on this Grant, so it will soon consume more of my time.  This week I've just had to send a few people information regarding the grant.

Yesterday, I was in Roseburg all day for a Trade Act Information Session for Roseburg Forest Products workers.  For various reasons, this Trade Act petition was submitted under the old, pre-2009, Trade Act law.  The timelines and caps on expenditures are much more strict under the old law.  The presenters from OED were very good.

Wednesday, there was an in-office meeting to discuss the vision and mission for our office and staff.  Among other things, we talked about the New Oregon Trails.  Unfortunately, at the moment, I can't find anything online to explain what that is and I don't have time to go in depth about it right now.  Shortly: New Oregon Trails is repackaging of what we do - build up the skills of rural Oregonians - to show what rural Oregon has to offer.  More than that, though. Planning, strategy, training, new connections and partnerships, industry sector clusters... it's a fairly comprehensive project under development.

Tuesday, Another Trade Act Information Session.  This time in Saint Helens for the Boise Paper workers.  Very good turn-out.  Presenters from OED weren't great, which is unfortunate since it's such a complicated program already - requires a clear and simple presentation to keep confusion to a minimum.

Monday was Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Last week: A couple of modifications to work on.  a fair amount of TOC policy revisions.  Electronic file reviews.  Quality Assurance visit scheduling.  Some work on reporting.  Well, a few brief sentence fragments doesn't do justice to my actual schedule, but it gives a rough idea of what fills some of the time.

OK, back to work - file reviews now.
